Welcome to the thriving and abundant capital of Peru. There’s many things to discover when discovering this incredible city either by yourself or with a Lima tour.
Lima is the capital of Peru, and was originally named ‘The City of Kings’ by the Spaniards when founded in 1535. Over 8 million people live in Lima, out of the 30 million of Peru’s total population.
Lima is a humid city given it is located right next to the Pacific Ocean. The temperatures during summer (December to March) range from 25-31 °C, and during winter (June to September) they drop to 13-17 °C. Given its unique location, it also means that it almost never rains in Lima!
Miraflores and Barranco are the very best places to stay in Lima, as they are safe, close to public transport, full of cultural sites and also have many places to eat and have fun. They are also the best places to join a Lima tour to explore different areas of the capital.
Peru is widely known for its delicious food, and Barranco is one of the very best places to get stuck-in. Lima has a lot of good quality restaurants for all tastes where we can try national classics such as Ceviche and Lomo Saltado, as well as Peru’s flagship drink of Pisco Sour. Tipping fees are around 10%, and may not be included in the bill of the restaurant.
If coming directly from the airport, you can pre-book an official taxi to your hotel using Airport Express (Link: https://www.airportexpresslima.com/). To get in and around the district, you can use online apps like EasyTaxi, Uber and Cabify that are safer than hailing street cabs. You can also use the Metropolitano buses which run from north to south of Lima (the cost per ride is PEN 2.50). Alternatively, you can join a Lima tour which includes private transport around the city.
Visiting the Costa Verde is an absolute- must-add to your Lima itinerary. Firstly we can head to Larcomar, a shopping mall with a theatre and many restaurants where you can also rent a bike and ride along infamous 5km Costa Verde circuit. Those who want to try surfing can also head down below to Playa Makaha to enjoy these ever-consistent waves, or simply relax on the rocks as we enjoy the views of the Pacific Ocean.
Those who love history will be in the perfect place here in Miraflores, where everything will be within easy walking distances. We can first head to the ancient ruins of Huaca Pucllana which are located in the heart of the district, and give us an insight into how the coastal cultures of Peru once ruled these lands. Afterwards we can then visit the art craft boutiques of the Inka Market to browse for relics and pottery, which make for some great souvenirs.
The famous desert oasis of Peru is home to some of the largest orange sand dunes in the continent. Whilst getting some amazing shots here is a must, we can also head on an adrenaline-fuelled Sandboarding tour and visit a Pisco winery.
Just a few hours south we can find this pretty seaside village, which is known for its interesting ancient museums and tasty ceviche. Here we can also visit the endemic Ballestas Islands, which are home to Humboldt Penguins, Seals, Cormorants and more!
